An Avista Utilities Safety Reminder: Always Call Before You Dig
Allow at least two working days to locate utility services prior to digging or excavating

Spokane, Wash.: The new national 811 “Call Before You Dig” service debuts today. In conjunction with the launch, Avista Utilities has an important reminder. Before beginning a construction or home improvement project, be sure to locate electric and natural gas services first. One dig with a shovel or backhoe could strike a natural gas or electric line that is buried dangerously close to the surface.

Locating these services is just a phone call or a click away on your computer. The key is to plan ahead at least two working days before excavating or digging begins to allow sufficient time to mark the location of any buried wire, cables or natural gas pipe.

By going to www.callbeforeyoudig.org, homeowners can provide their address, explain what type of work they plan to do and receive confirmation that someone will locate their services within two business days prior to beginning their project.

Even with today’s launch, the following 800 numbers can still be used to locate services:
. Washington: (800) 424-5555
. Idaho:
Benewah, Shoshone Counties: (800) 398-3285
Bonner, Boundary Counties: (800) 626-4950
Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis and Nez Perce Counties: (800) 342-1585
Kootenai County: (800) 428-4950
. Oregon: (800) 332-2344

“Knowing where lines are buried helps prevent injury and expense,” said Terry Bushnell, Avista Utilities director of safety and training. “Damage to utility lines can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, cause harm and result in repair expenses.”

The new national 811 number is the same in every state. So, whether people pick up the phone or go online, the important thing is to always “Call Before You Dig.”
