August 13, 2014: The Nine Mile project includes replacing original 1906 turbine generating Units 1 and 2, and associated equipment which will increase the generation of clean, renewable, low-cost power to customers. Avista plans to draw the reservoir down between three to six feet beginning August 15 with a preference to keeping it as close to three feet as possible. The drawdown, which will continue until the end of the year, is a safety measure that will provide the workers time to evacuate the construction barge in the event normal plant operations are interrupted.
In addition to the August drawdown, Avista will need to draw the reservoir down 12 feet during the middle of October for approximately one week. This drawdown will allow Avista to replace additional equipment. As in past, Avista will take two days to draw the reservoir down in an effort to minimize erosion and other effects on aquatic resources.
While the reservoir is drawn down in October Avista will also construct the Nine Mile Boat-Take-Out, which is located upstream of the dam, and will continue its efforts toward removing invasive flowering rush plants along the shoreline.
During the drawdown period Avista asks that landowners secure docks and plan recreation activities with this in mind. This is also a good time for landowners to complete approved dock or equipment maintenance. And finally, please remember water levels and conditions around the dam are subject to change at any time, river-users should exercise caution whenever using the waterways.
