Avista Completes Underground Power Lines in North Spokane
New transmission facilities will improve reliability of electric service

Avista has completed the installation of underground transmission cables and other utility services from the company’s Post Street Substation to the College and Walnut Substation. Avista energized the new electric transmission lines today.

The project will enhance reliability of electrical service to the West Central neighborhood and will provide power for the new Kendall Yards Development.

From design through construction, the $2.8 million project took 12 months to complete. It involved blasting bedrock for new underground ductwork and stringing four inch thick cables below the Monroe Street Dam. The cables are heavily armored against water and other potential environmental damage. The entire cable run is 2,800 feet.

The project included significant upgrades at the two substations, and included a new fiber optic communications link.
