Avista Crews Working Through the Night to Restore Power to Customers
Power restored to nearly 90 percent of customers impacted by last night’s storm

Nov. 16, 2010, 7:15 p.m.  Avista crews will continue working through the night to restore power to the approximately 4,800 customers who remain without service at this time following the high winds that moved through the region last evening causing extensive damage. At the peak, approximately 45,000 customers were without power.

The majority of customers in Lewiston, Clarkston, Orofino, Grangeville, Elk City, Cottonwood, Colfax, Moscow and Pullman are expected to have their service restored over night. However, some customers in these areas may remain without service until Wednesday.

Because of the extensive damage to Avista’s electric system, customers in Kendrick, Juliette and Potlatch are not expected to have service restored until Wednesday evening. In Potlatch, Idaho, 11 power poles were broken by high winds and are currently being replaced. Customers with portable generators are reminded that improperly installed generators can backfeed into electrical lines and endanger the lives of emergency workers and your neighbors. The only safe method of using a portable generator is to plug electrical appliances directly into the generator. The generator’s exhaust can be deadly, so it is essential that the unit’s exhaust be properly ventilated.
