Avista Earns Top Stewardship Honor

Spokane, Wash.: Avista has received the highest award in the hydropower industry. The Outstanding Stewardship of America’s Waters (OSAW) award recognizes Avista’s collaborative efforts to protect the fisheries in Lake Pend Oreille by working with stakeholders to reduce predatory species.

Through a multi-faceted collaborative effort, Avista, the Clark Fork Management Committee, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, local anglers and others are working together to reduce the population of predatory lake trout through commercial netting, angler incentives and education programs. “Lake Pend Oreille is one of the most important fisheries in the state of Idaho. Right now we are involved in one of the most aggressive and controversial fishery recovery efforts ever attempted. Without the significant support and funding from Avista and the contributions of other stakeholders, little of what we’ve accomplished to date would have been possible,” says Ned Horner, Regional Fishery Manager, Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Avista engages in a number of stewardship activities on the Clark Fork River and has received previous awards for projects ranging from accessible recreation facilities to bull trout recovery efforts.

“This award is truly a reflection of the efforts of a number of individuals and organizations,” said Bob Anderson, Avista director of environmental affairs. “We are very fortunate to have diverse and dedicated stakeholders with a range of expertise on our Clark Fork Project Management Committee. They deserve to share this recognition.”
