Dec. 3, 2013: Avista Foundation today announced grants totaling $93,500 to non-profit organizations in Spokane, Pullman and Loon Lake, Wash. and Sandpoint, Idaho. The grants will help fund programs in the areas of assistance to limited income populations, initiatives to reduce poverty, and helping communities and citizens grow and prosper.
Inland Northwest Community Foundation -- $50,000
As part of its mission to foster vibrant and sustainable communities, the Inland Northwest Community Foundation, based in Spokane, is embarking on a three-year initiative to align efforts of community-based organizations with Spokane Public Schools, targeting Shaw and Garry middle schools in northeast Spokane. The alignment will allow for better assessment and reduction of risk factors (attendance, behaviors and course completion) that otherwise make it difficult for students to achieve on-time graduation and become ready for jobs after high school.
Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation -- $20,000
Pullman Regional Hospital provides health care to the residents of southeastern Washington, including the campus of Washington State University. The hospital is a community leader for integrated health and healing activities with a commitment to providing access to care and serving underserved populations. The grant will help fund new equipment and assist in establishing an endowment fund for the hospital.
HUB Sports Center (Spokane Valley HUB) -- $10,000
The HUB Sports Center , in Spokane Valley, offers a wide range of programs, including youth sports and classes to promote healthy lifestyles and choices. It serves more than 160,000 people each year. The HUB’s capital campaign to purchase the facility they currently use will lay the foundation for expanding indoor space for sports, events and tournaments for people of all ages from around the region.
Spokane Public Radio -- $10,000
Spokane Public Radio (SPR) provides high quality artistic, educational and informational programming, which enhances the cultural life and civic discourse of its listening communities throughout the Inland Northwest and beyond. Currently housed in aging leased space over a retail establishment, SPR is buying and remodeling the historic Fire Station No. 3 in Spokane’s West Central neighborhood. The new space will be LEED certified as energy efficient, and it will provide SPR much needed space for its radio operations and community events.
Loon Lake Food Bank & Resource Center -- $2,000
The Loon Lake Food Bank & Resource Center provides food to people in need in Stevens County, Wash. Volunteers make trips to Spokane, the nearest source of food supplies, five times per week and are in need of reliable and safe transportation. The grant will help fund a replacement commercial vehicle that will make it possible to continue the collection and distribution of food to those in need.
Community Cancer Services -- $1,500
Community Cancer Services in Sandpoint, Idaho, offers programs to improve both the comfort and quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer and provides community education on all aspects of the disease. The grant supports the Enriched Recovery Program, that provides financial and advocacy support for cancer patients who are in need in Bonner and Boundary counties.
