Avista Joins Customers to Boost Emergency Energy Assistance
Increased support for Project Share will help more people in need this heating season

 

Customers of Avista Utilities have once again shown their generosity with their donations to Project Share. In 2008, Avista customers in Washington, Idaho and Oregon donated $246,848 to this emergency energy assistance fund. Avista is pleased to partner with customers in giving to Project Share by adding $220,000 to the $280,000 donation made in December 2008, bringing its total donation to $500,000 for the 2008-2009 heating season. Grants from Project Share benefit qualifying households in Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

 

“As our entire nation continues to work toward solutions to the current financial challenges, those least able to pay their energy bills will need even more assistance,” said Scott Morris, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Avista Corp. “This year, the continued support of Project Share by families and individuals in our region is more important and more needed than before.”

 

Morris added that Avista funds its contribution to Project Share from shareholder earnings so that it does not impact customer rates.

 

SNAP (Spokane Neighborhood Action Partner) and other community action agencies in Washington, Idaho and Oregon administer Project Share. Avista first sponsored the program in 1982 to provide emergency energy assistance to qualifying households that have exhausted other avenues of aid. The funds are available to those in need, regardless of the fuel used to heat the home and whether or not they are Avista customers.

 

In addition to Project Share, Avista supports several programs for qualifying customers needing energy assistance, including the Low Income Rate Assistance Program (LIRAP) for customers in Washington and Oregon, Customer Assistance Referral and Education Service (CARES), Senior Energy Conservation Workshops and, in Washington, the Senior Energy Outreach Program.

 

Avista offers a number of billing options, energy efficiency programs, incentives and rebates to help customers proactively manage their electricity and natural gas consumption and payment schedule. In addition, Avista’s Comfort Level Billing option gives customers the opportunity to smooth seasonal energy bill highs and lows by averaging energy bills over 12 months.
