Avista Offers Advice to Help Customers Protect Their Identity
What customers can expect from Avista employees

Spokane, Wash.: SPOKANE, Wash. – Feb. 28, 2007: With the nationwide increase in attempts to steal personal identity data and financial account information, known as phishing, Avista wants to remind customers about its standard business practices.

“Our employees do not phone a customer and ask for confidential information,” says Steve Plewman, Avista customer service manager. “If a customer receives a call from someone claiming to be an Avista representative asking for confidential information, the customer should end the call and phone us at (800) 227-9187. Avista’s contact service representatives can verify the validity of the call. Do not give any personal information over the phone unless you are certain of the caller and need for the information.”

Avista encourages customers to remain alert to phishing scams attempted online, as well. Avista never sends e-mail messages requesting account information.

To protect personal property, customers should also be alert to Avista’s field practices. Avista’s field employees always wear Avista photo ID badge, and often will be wearing Avista apparel and driving a clearly marked Avista vehicle. Employees typically do not need access to a customer’s home or business unless the customer has contacted Avista about a specific problem. Customers may contact Avista at (800) 227-9187 at any time to verify the identification of an employee.

“The trust of our customers is important to Avista,” Plewman said. “We want to make sure our customers have the information they need to help protect themselves from phishing and to protect their personal property.”
