Avista Power Down, Add Up Contest Encourages University Students to Conserve Energy
Students competing for prizes while celebrating Energy Awareness Month

Oct. 1, 2010:  Avista kicked off Energy Awareness month with a new energy savings contest for local university students called Power Down, Add Up, promoting energy efficient behavior. In its first year, the contest is targeting university students living in on-campus or Greek housing.

Power Down, Add Up is a competition in which students living in on-campus dorms or Greek housing will compete against one another to use less energy during October. This year, both Gonzaga University and Washington State University signed up to compete. Resident and Greek Life Advisors at each school are encouraging students to take simple steps like turning off electronics and unplugging chargers when not in use, turning off lights when leaving a room, and not letting the hot water run unused.

“We are excited to have local university students involved in energy saving activities for Energy Awareness Month,” said Chris Drake, lead energy efficiency program manager for Avista. “Saving energy can be very simple and every little bit adds up. While students may not be thinking about their energy bill yet, we hope they can build good habits that will help them save energy in the long run.”

Students will track their efforts using an online diary, and the three living groups that have the most energy saving activities will receive “power-less” prizes. The winning university will receive a travelling trophy and bragging rights for a year to commemorate their savings. Avista will announce the winners in early November. Visit www.everylittlebit.com/powerdownaddup to track their energy savings and see who’s in the lead.

For students who rent off-campus or pay their own utility bill, Avista is offering energy saving kits, tips and ideas online. Visit www.everylittlebit.com/powermonger to join in and save energy. You can also find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/everylittlebit.
