Avista Receives National Recognition for Employee Safety
American Gas Association and OSHA honor Avista for 2004 employee safety record

Spokane, Wash., May 19// -- Avista (NYSE:AVA) was one of 12 U.S. energy utility companies honored for outstanding achievements in promoting operations safety by the American Gas Association at its recent 2005 Operations Conference and exhibition. Avista was recognized for having the lowest disability injury and illness rate among large combination electric and natural gas companies and for having a disability injury rate lower than the average rate in the industry.

Ron Peterson, Avista vice president and chairman of the company's Central Safety Council, said the company's 2004 safety record of 1.08 lost time incidents for every 200,000 hours worked is a result of the continuing emphasis on safety by employees.

"Being recognized for having the fewest lost time incidents per hours worked than any other large combination utility in the nation is certainly an honor for the company and its employees. But what is most important to Avista is having our employees healthy and staying safe every day on the job. They are doing an outstanding job," said Peterson.

Avista has also received an Accident Prevention Certificate from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for achieving a 2004 total recordable injury and illness incidence rate below the industry average for the company's size and type. The company had only 70 recordable incidents reported to OSHA in 2004 out of almost 500,000 workdays.

The American Gas Association represents 195 local energy utility companies that deliver natural gas to more than 56 million homes, businesses and industries throughout the United States.
