Avista Suggests Completing an Energy Checklist Before Going on Vacation
A few steps could help control your summer energy bill while you are away

Spokane, Wash., June 30// -- Before leaving home for vacation this summer, Avista suggests taking a few simple steps which could help control your home's energy use while you are while away and ensure you get the most value for your energy dollar.

Before leaving on vacation, you should:
. Turn down the temperature on the water heater. If you are away for an extended time, turn it down to the lowest setting. Be sure to remember to turn it back up when you return since it could take several hours to re-heat.
. Unplug all unnecessary electric appliances, such as computers, stereos, VCRs and DVDs. These appliances use electricity even they are turned off.
. Set the thermostat on your air-conditioning to the low 80s. Better yet, use a programmable thermostat.
. Turn down or turn off your waterbed heater. Like water heaters, waterbeds take time to re-heat.
. Turn off pool or spa heaters and reduce filtering time to minimum.

If your energy bill stays the same or increases even though you followed these energy saving tips, there may be a few reasons to keep in mind:
. When preparing to go on vacation, there can be increased energy use due to extra laundry, cooking, cleaning and other activities, which will impact your bill.
. Some appliances like your refrigerator, freezer and water heater continue to operate even when you are away.
. Automatic air-conditioners set to turn on will continue to use energy while you are away.
. There can be increased energy use when you return home because of extra laundry.
