Avista Takes Precautionary Measures for Dry Weather Conditions

August 9, 2010: Avista is undertaking temporary changes to power line operations in preparation for dry summer conditions and high fire danger in our region.

At this time, affected areas include Spokane, the Palouse and the Lewiston Clarkston Valley. Depending on weather conditions, other parts of the Avista service territory could also be affected.

These temporary changes are being made to decrease potential for fires that could occur by re-energizing a downed power line in an unknown condition. These lines, typically those located in rural and/or forested areas, are normally re-energized automatically. Instead, line personnel may have to physically patrol the outage area before the line is placed back into service.

These changes cannot be guaranteed to eliminate a fire. The changes to Avista’s rural/forested lines may result in some additional outages and if an outage does occur it could take longer to reenergize the line and restore power.

Avista will return the distribution system to normal as soon as weather permits. Avista appreciates the patience of its customers during this time.
