Avista Utilities Reminds Customers to Stay Safe and Report Downed Power Lines
To report an outage to Avista, call customer service at (800) 227-9187

Spokane, Wash., March 16// -- With high winds forecasted in the region today, the possibility exists for downed power lines and power outages. Safety of the public and our employees is our number one priority, so Avista Utilities urges everyone to stay safe by staying away from downed power lines.

If you see a downed power line, call Avista at (800) 227-9187 immediately to report its location. Never touch or attempt to remove fallen limbs from downed or sagging power lines. Treat all power lines as if they are energized, or carrying electrical current. Remember to keep all children and pets away from the area.

Reporting an Outage
If your power goes out, check to see if your neighbors have lost power, too. You may be part of a larger outage area, or your home may be an isolated outage. Always report the outage to Avista at (800) 227-9187 and relay any information on whether you heard or can see anything that can help determine the cause of the outage. Reporting an outage to Avista is the best way to find out more about the outage, and it will also help Avista determine the scope of an outage.

Preparing for an Outage
While most outages are short-lived, it's best to prepare for any situation. Some items to make sure you have on hand prior to an outage include:

. Flashlight with fresh batteries
. Battery-powered radio
. Battery or wind-up alarm clock
. Candles and holders
. Matches
. Manual can opener

Other helpful tips in the event of a power outage include:
. Turn on a porch light so repair crews and you will know when power is restored to your home.
. Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive electronic equipment, even if you have surge protectors.
. Lower the thermostat on heat sources to a minimum.
. Make sure the oven and cook top are turned off.
. Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible to preserve food.
