Avista Utilities Reports Weather-Related Outages
To report an outage or downed power line to Avista, call customer service at (800) 227-9187

SPOKANE, Wash., Jan. 10 / 3:30 p.m.: Heavy, wet snow and strong winds from a storm system moving through the region last night and this morning caused almost 5,000 Avista Utilities customers to lose power. Problems include downed power lines and poles, as well as trees and limbs blown into power lines.

The Sandpoint area was hardest hit by the storm, and 1,675 customers in the area remain without power at 3:30 this afternoon. Other areas without service include Colville, Grangeville, Kellogg and the Palouse area. At this time a total of 1,951 customers remain without service.

Additional Avista Utilities crews from Spokane and Coeur d’Alene have been sent to assist with restoration in the Sandpoint area. Avista is striving to have the majority of customers returned to service tonight; however, some customers will remain without power into tomorrow because of the extent of the damage to power lines and poles. Avista crews will continue working until all service has been restored.

During the restoration process, Avista crews initially focus on securing downed power lines and making repairs that restore service to the largest number of customers at one time. The next priority is restoring service to small groups of customers on lines that extend outward from more densely populated areas. Restoring service to single residences is the final step in the restoration process.

Avista Utilities reminds the public to stay away from downed power lines and to report an outage or downed power line by calling (800) 227-9187. Never touch or attempt to remove fallen limbs from downed or sagging power lines. Treat all power lines as if they are energized, or carrying electrical current. Remember to keep all children and pets away from the area.
When reporting an outage, relay any information that can help determine the cause of the outage, such as a sound heard or something visual.
