Avista Working to Meet Growing Customer Demand in Rathdrum
Substation upgrade will increase capacity and reliability of service, but first comes the outages

Avista crews have been working since early June on a $2 million project to upgrade the company’s substation which serves about 3,000 customers in Rathdrum, Idaho. When the work is completed in early October, the capacity of the substation will almost double and service reliability will be increased. That’s good news for customers who have experienced unexpected outages during the construction.

“We know the patience of our customers has been tested during construction, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” said Marc Schaffner, Avista’s construction manager for Coeur d’Alene. “Safety for our employees and customers comes first, and we’ll do all we can to minimize the number of outages during construction.”

Impacted by the construction and possible outages are customers in the Rathdrum area from Boekel Road north to Twin Lakes and from Church Road to Highway 95.

“Much has changed in Rathdrum since the original substation was constructed in 1978, including the amount of electricity we need to power our lives. This upgrade to our substation will help ensure that customers have the energy and service reliability they need into the future,” Schaffner said.
