Avista and Idaho Power to Assess Coal Based Power Plant Sites
New coal resources needed in addition to renewable energy

Spokane, Wash., February 1// -- Avista Corp. (NYSE: AVA) and Boise based Idaho Power have entered into an agreement to jointly investigate possible future coal-based generation resources. The utilities have each identified coal based generation in their respective Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) as one of several resource types they plan to pursue. The plans also include acquisition of significant amounts of conservation and renewable energy.

The engineering firms of Cummins & Barnard, Inc. and Power Engineers will assist Avista and Idaho Power to fully assess and develop the elements of potential coal projects. Cummins and Barnard, Inc. will lead the preliminary screening analysis and assessment of alternatives. Power Engineers will provide the transmission analysis associated with this effort.

Avista's 2005 IRP calls for acquisition of 69 megawatts (MW) of conservation, 400 MW of wind, 80 MW of other renewable resources, 52 MW of hydroelectric efficiency upgrades and 250 MW of coal-based generation over a period of ten years.

Idaho Power's 2004 IRP calls for the acquisition of a number of resources including 124 MW of energy conservation programs, 350 MW of wind, 100 MW of geothermal, and 500 MW of coal-based generation in its portfolio of resources that the company could use to meet future growth. Idaho Power owns and operates 17 hydroelectric plants on the Snake River or its tributaries, is part owner in three coal-fired generating plants in Nevada, Oregon and Wyoming, and serves more than 440,000 customers in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon.
