SPOKANE, Wash. - Feb. 25, 2016: It’s been another successful year for Spokane Public Schools (SPS) in reducing operating costs through energy efficiency updates. Improvements made during 2015 have qualified the school district for $44,601 in rebates and incentives from Avista, and are expected to save SPS approximately $23,000 a year in energy costs.

Energy efficiency improvements made in 2015 incorporated the completion of several projects from the 2009-2014 School Bond, including the remodel of Hutton and Mullan Elementary Schools and an addition to the NewTech Skills Center located in the northeast area.

By installing high-efficiency boilers, chillers, lighting and other measures as part of the remodeling projects, SPS will reduce their annual energy needs by almost 170,000 kilowatt-hours and about 14,000 therms.

“Reducing energy use is a great example to set for our future generations,” said Spokane Public Schools associate superintendent Mark Anderson. “We are grateful to Avista for providing opportunities that allow the school district to save energy, as well as taxpayer dollars.”

Since 2005, Spokane Public Schools has completed nearly 250 different energy efficiency projects. Projects vary from installing high-efficiency appliances and lighting to upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. As a result, the school district has received more than $2.7 million in energy efficiency rebates.

"Avista’s ongoing partnership with Spokane Public Schools provides us with a great opportunity to help our local schools achieve their energy efficiency goals,” said Ann Carey, Avista’s multi-site account executive. “By taking advantage of Avista’s energy efficiency programs over the past ten years, SPS has saved enough energy to power approximately 800 homes for a year and provide natural gas to more than 400 homes.”
