Avista event will highlight energy planning to meet customer needs, federal and state mandates
Hands-on interactive exercise will provide real-time feedback on simulated planning decisions

Nov. 7, 2011: Avista invites customers to the next workshop in its series of “Powering Our Future” events – How do we meet your energy needs reliably and responsibly, while integrating renewable power? – on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011. The event will be held at CenterPlace at Mirabeau Point in Spokane Valley from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There is no admission charge, but seating is limited. Reservations can be made online at www.poweringourfuture.eventbrite.com.

“We’ve heard from our customers that they want more energy from renewable sources. Our responsibility is to manage a diversified portfolio of energy resources, while meeting an increasing number of state and federal mandates for renewable energy generation and tighter reliability standards. It is becoming increasingly more complex to plan for an energy future that meets customers’ needs for safe, reliable energy,” said Dick Storro, Avista vice president for energy resources. “Through this event we hope to help customers develop a better understanding of the need to balance energy resources, costs, environmental impact and service reliability. These are the kinds of decisions that are made with input from our stakeholders every two years when we develop our 20-year Integrated Resource Plan. “

The keynote speaker for the event will be Jim Yost, Idaho Council Member on the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. Rick Sterling, engineering supervisor for the Idaho Public Utilities Commission, will also participate. They will be joined by Storro, Bob Lafferty, Avista director of power supply, and Kevin Christie, Avista director of gas supply.

The event will include a hands-on, interactive exercise to help participants build awareness of the multiple elements involved in planning to meet energy needs for the next 20 years. In the exercise participants will work in groups to determine the percentages of new energy resources to add to the utility’s current resource mix and then receive real-time feedback on the the potential impacts of their simulated decisions.
