Avista names Grant Forsyth Chief Economist
Long-time Chief Economist Randy Barcus to retire

May 14, 2012: Avista announced today that Grant Forsyth has joined the company as its chief economist. In this role Forsyth will provide economic forecasts in Avista’s three-state service territory for electric and natural gas usage. Forsyth will take over the position currently held by Randy Barcus who is retiring in July.

Forsyth is well-versed in the regional economy having served as a researcher and professor of economics at Eastern Washington University for more than a decade. He also serves on the Washington Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors and the Spokane Mayor’s Council on Economic Policy and Forecasting.

“Grant comes to us with a great skill set as an academic and private sector researcher and economist,” said Mark Thies, Avista’s chief financial officer. “His abilities will serve Avista well as we consider revenue forecasts, capital planning, energy resource planning and regulatory activities.”

Forsyth is originally from Ellensburg, Wash., but has lived and worked in both the United States, and Europe. He currently lives in Spokane, Wash., with his wife Sharon.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to work at Avista and continue to develop and share economic forecasts and insights with the communities we serve,” Forsyth said.

Departing Avista is well-known and long-time Chief Economist Randy Barcus. Barcus will retire this July after serving in numerous positions at Washington Water Power and Avista during his 33 years of employment. Barcus plans to continue teaching economics and statistics at the collegiate level during his retirement.

“Randy will certainly be missed at Avista,” Thies said. “He is well-respected by his colleagues here and throughout the energy industry.”

Both Forsyth and Barcus will speak at the 2012 Spokane County Economic Symposium on May 18 at Eastern Washington University’s Riverpoint Campus in downtown Spokane.
