Avista wraps up rock relocation project at Monroe Street Dam
Huntington Park will be closed Aug. 20-21 to remove 250-ton crane used for work

Aug. 18, 2014: Avista has wrapped up work at its Monroe Street Dam, located in Huntington Park in downtown Spokane, to relocate rocks that had accumulated from high and extended river flows during the past two springs. The rock was relocated downstream of the dam where it will continue acting as trout spawning habitat in the Spokane River system.

To ensure public safety while the 210-foot boom is disassembled and removed along with the crane, Huntington Park will be closed Aug. 20 and 21. The park will reopen to the public on Aug. 22.

Prior to starting the project on Aug. 4, an underwater dive inspection pinpointed areas at the dam and intake structure with the most rock buildup. Focusing on those areas allowed Avista to complete the project a week ahead of schedule. Removing the rock buildup is necessary to prevent damage to the dam’s intake structure and from interfering with the generation of electricity for customers.

“Since Huntington Park was opened to the public at its dedication on May 2, 2014, it has become a popular spot for Spokane residents and visitors to enjoy views of the Spokane River and Lower Falls. We apologize for having to temporarily close the park for portions of the work, but are very pleased the project wrapped up early and safely,” said Speed Fitzhugh, Spokane River License Manager for Avista.
