November 27, 2012 - As energy efficiency initiatives become increasingly important for utilities, many are enlisting the expertise of Ecova—a total energy and sustainability management company—to design successful programs that help customers and businesses save energy and money.
One long-time Ecova customer, Arizona Public Service (APS), recently achieved a major milestone selling 17 million CFL bulbs through its APS Residential Energy Efficient Lighting Program. Ecova worked with APS to design and implement the program, which has fostered energy savings and greater customer satisfaction since its inception in 2005.
Considered one of the most successful utility-sponsored energy efficiency product programs in the country, APS has received many awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including its highest honor, The ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award. APS’ Residential Energy Efficient Lighting Program uses promotions at participating retailers to offer APS customers instant discounts on a variety of CFL bulbs. With each CFL using 75-percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs, the program has enabled APS customers to collectively save approximately 906 million kWh annually, equivalent to the energy needs of 75,000 average households.
As utilities turn to Ecova to develop best-in-class energy efficiency programs, Ecova assists in the fundamental program design, works with manufacturers and retailers to secure their participation, and delivers effective implementation and marketing campaigns that increase awareness, create consumer action, and deliver results for the utility.
“Ecova brings more than 17 years of experience developing successful utility retail programs,” said Ted Schultz, Ecova’s senior vice president. “We understand utility needs and the issues they face, but also consumer behaviors. This insight enables us to create comprehensive programs that help utilities and customers save more and sustain more.”
Ecova increases adoption of energy efficient products in the lighting, appliance, consumer electronics, and water heater categories through innovative retail utility programs.

· Appliance programs: Ecova works with utilities to incentivize customers to purchase energy-efficient appliances using proven marketing and merchandizing strategies.
· Consumer electronics programs: Ecova partners with utilities to establish supplier incentives at the point-of-purchase to promote energy efficient consumer electronics—from televisions to computers—which contributes to energy savings across a utilities’ service area.
· Water heater programs: Fifty percentof all water heaters are sold through the retail channel. Ecova effectively addresses market barriers through its program design and industry partnerships.
