Fresh Start Gets Support to Help Warm Those in Need This Winter
Coeur d’Alene non-profit is a community resource for the homeless

As winter settles in, those individuals who are homeless or mentally ill often have the most difficult time with the long, cold days and nights. Fresh Start, a drop-in center at 1524 East Sherman Avenue, offers those in need of clothing, a hot meal, and most importantly a warm place to sleep on nights when the temperatures dip below 15 degrees. Grants of $2,500 from the Avista Foundation and $2,500 from the Avista Fund at the Inland Northwest Community Foundation will help Fresh Start meet the growing need for these kinds of services.

“We are seeing an increasing number of people coming to Fresh Start so far this year, and our resources are being stretched to their limits. We are very grateful for the assistance from the Avista Foundation and the Avista Fund in this time of tremendous need,” said Howard Martinson, executive director of Fresh Start.

Patty Shea, Avista regional business manager for North Idaho said, “The increasing costs of everything from groceries to energy are impacting everyone these days, especially the non-profit organizations that serve our most vulnerable citizens. These grants to Fresh Start will help keep the warming center open when the frigid winter temperatures hit our community.”
