Kellogg School District Saves Energy and Dollars
Pinehurst Elementary to receive rebate for energy efficiency upgrades from Avista

May 19, 2011: Installing new windows and insulation at Pinehurst Elementary School has earned Kellogg School District an Avista energy efficiency incentive check for over $50,000.

The upgrades, which will save the school district over $10,000 in energy costs annually, include replacing over 2,000 square feet of single-pane windows with double-pane windows and upgrading the insulation in the walls. The energy efficient measures will reduce the school’s annual energy demand by more than 48,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and 12,000 natural gas therms. That’s enough savings to power four homes and provide natural gas service to 15 homes for a year.

“Making energy efficient upgrades is a smart choice for school districts wanting to reduce their operating costs while having a positive environmental impact,” said Sharmon Schmitt, Avista’s account executive. “We applaud the Kellogg School District for their focus on energy efficiency and its long-lasting benefit.”

Avista offers a variety of energy management tools and services for residential, commercial and industrial customers. For over three decades Avista has offered the tariff-based programs because, generally, it costs less to help customers reduce their usage through energy efficiency programs than to acquire additional, more costly energy resources to meet the growing energy needs of customers.

“Partnering with Avista on energy efficient upgrades throughout our school district has been a seamless process,” said Tim Etherton, facilities manager for Kellogg School District. “The money we are able to save is put back into our construction funds and used for necessary upgrades throughout our district.”
