Maintenance to Start on Avista’s Historic Washington Water Power Building
Work will temporarily close the sidewalk in front of the Post Street building

Aug. 22, 2013: The lettering atop Avista’s historic Washington Water Power building at North 337 Post Street in Spokane will be undergoing maintenance Aug. 26 through Sept. 9, causing the sidewalk in front of the building to be closed during the work.
The maintenance involves restoring the green Washington Water Power lettering, including adding LED lights for increased energy efficiency and improving safety for future light replacement. In late September, maintenance on windows in the over 100-year-old building will also begin.
Designed by famed architect Kirtland Cutter, the historic Washington Water Power building was built in 1909 by The Washington Water Power Company, now Avista. The building, included in the National Register of Historic Places, has served as a warehouse and sheltered streetcars.
Four ornate iron domes, or cupolas, that originally graced the corners of the building were donated to the U.S. government during the World War II scrap metal shortage.
The maintenance on the historic Washington Water Power building is among several projects that Avista currently has underway in Riverfront Park. Updates to Avista-owned Huntington Park will enhance river views and access on the south side of the Spokane River between Post and Monroe streets. In addition, Avista is constructing a plaza on city-owned property north of City Hall, which will be a gift to the City of Spokane from shareholders of Avista Corp. The plaza will create open-air space for gatherings and river viewing. Avista is also repainting its 1922 Upper Falls Powerhouse and replacing the Theme Stream Bridge, both located in Riverfront Park.
