Post Falls Boat Ramp Closed Early
Wet weather requires spill at dam

SPOKANE, Wash. – Nov. 9, 2006: The Q’emiln Park boat ramp on the Spokane River in Post Falls, Idaho has been closed until further notice.  The ramp, located upstream of Avista Utilities’ Post Falls Hydroelectric Development, must be closed for safety reasons whenever water is spilled through gates at the Post Falls Dam.  Recent rains have dramatically increased inflows of water into Coeur d’Alene Lake and Avista is working to prevent upstream flooding by opening spill gates.

The boat ramp was originally scheduled to close on Monday, Nov. 13.

“If weather permits, Avista will attempt to re-open the boat ramp for a short period to allow river users to remove boats and other equipment for winter. Otherwise the ramp will not re-open until late spring or early summer, depending on the amount of inflows into Coeur d’Alene Lake ,” said Pat Maher, hydro operations engineer for Avista.

Water levels are expected to drop several more feet by the end of January. River levels are subject to change due to weather conditions and river users should be aware that sudden changes may occur at any time.

Avista has a 24-hour telephone information line that provides notification of anticipated elevation changes on Coeur d’Alene Lake , Lake Spokane and the Spokane River during the subsequent 24-hour and one-week periods. In Idaho, call (208) 769-1357; in Washington call (509) 495-8043.
